This democratization of music creation is one of the most significant disruptions brought about by AI. By lowering the barriers to entry, AI technology is making music creation accessible to a broader audience, which could lead to a surge in musical diversity and innovation[ 3 ] .
Yet, the integration of AI into music production is not without controversy. Critics argue that AI-generated music could contribute to the homogenization of cultur- al expression, potentially eroding regional and cultural musical traditions[ 4 ] . The creative process, which has historically been a deeply human endeavor involving
emotional and intellectual labor, is being fundamentally altered by AI. The question arises whether these technological advancements will lead to a harmonious fusion of human ingenuity and AI innovation or if they will inadvertently homogenize cultural outputs[ 5 ] .
Furthermore, the legal and ethical dimensions of AI-generated music are under scrutiny. The European Union Intellectual Property Office and the Court of Justice of the European Union have emphasized the need for originality in creative works, which necessitates a distinct level of human involvement[ 6 ] . For instance, AI production tools can assist artists in generating innovative new sounds by experimenting with different musical elements and styles [ 3 ] .
Collaborative and Assistive Roles
AI’s role in music isn’t limited to solo compositions; it also enhances collaboration between human musicians and technology. AI software can help generate ideas,
follow specific stylistic requirements, and even accompany human performers by listening and adapting in real-time [ 6 ] . This collaboration allows artists to focus on the creative aspects of their projects while AI handles the more technical elements [ 11 ] .
Impact on Creativity and Innovation
One of the most compelling aspects of AI in music is its potential to push the boundaries of creativity. AI algorithms can explore unique combinations of musical elements that may not be immediately intuitive to human composers, resulting in innovative and unprecedented sounds [ 3 ] . This capacity for innovation is a significant draw for many artists, who see AI as a tool that can enhance their creative output and expand their artistic horizons [ 12 ] .
Popularity and Adoption
The popularity of AI tools in music production is growing rapidly, with a significant percentage of musicians incorporating these technologies into their workflow. Ac- cording to recent data, 28.6% of music producers are currently using AI for mixing and mastering tasks [ 13 ] . This widespread adoption underscores AI’s efficacy in making music production more efficient and accessible, providing artists with more time to focus on creative endeavors [ 14 ] [ 11 ] .
Challenges and Ethical Considerations
Despite the many advantages, the rise of AI-generated music also brings challenges and ethical considerations. Issues related to authenticity, authorship, and the poten- tial for job displacement within the music industry are at the forefront of ongoing debates [ 15 ] . As AI continues to evolve, these discussions will likely shape the future landscape of music creation, compelling us to rethink traditional notions of creativity and artistic expression [ 12 ] [ 5 ] .
Impact on the Music Industry

However, AI is presenting new challenges and opportunities, particularly in managing the inundation of music con- tent generated by AI technologies[ 16 ] . Streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music are already utilizing AI algorithms to suggest songs based on users’ listening habits, and the technology’s potential extends even further[ 17 ] . This personalization capability could significantly enhance the listener’s experience, though it also raises concerns about the homogenization of music and the potential stifling of artistic creativity[ 4 ] .
AI’s role in the music industry is multifaceted. On one hand, it democratizes music creation, allowing individuals without traditional musical training to produce music from their bedrooms, thereby potentially making the industry more inclusive[ 18 ] [ 3 ] . On the other hand, it poses ethical and creative challenges, including the risk of job loss among musicians and the creation of formulaic music[ 17 ] . There is also a concern about the erosion of regional and cultural musical traditions, which could negatively impact cultural and societal experiences[ 4 ] .
Despite these challenges, AI offers significant benefits. However, it is crucial to ensure that AI-generated music complements rather than replaces traditional music creation methods[ 20 ] .

For example, tools like WavTool, the first text-to-music generator supporting MIDI compositions and sound effects, offer free versions that allow artists to create music with limited prompts[ 26 ] . Additionally, AI can assist with organizing massive music libraries, suggesting chord progressions, melodies, and harmonies that complement an artist’s style[ 10 ] . These tools save time and allow artists to concentrate on the artistic aspects of their craft.

However, the rise of AI-generated music also presents risks and ethical concerns.

According to Rare Connections, 60% of musicians utilize AI in some capacity, whether for mastering, generating artwork, or composing[ 11 ] .
However, the rapid proliferation of AI-generated music also raises significant con- cerns. Major record labels are anxious about “market share dilution,” fearing that the influx of AI-generated content could reduce their revenue under streaming services’ pro-rata business model[ 1 ] . Warner Music Group’s CEO, Robert Kyncl, acknowledged the transformative potential of AI but also expressed concerns about its implications for the industry[ 1 ] . In response to these anxieties, the Recording Industry Association of America has taken legal steps against AI scrapers that use copyrighted work to train models without authorization, drawing parallels to lawsuits against AI image generators[ 29 ] .
Artists have also voiced their concerns. Some argue that AI’s ability to replicate personal styles and voices without permission could commodify their work for others'
gain[ 18 ] . The resignation of Edward Newton-Rex, vice president of audio at Stability AI, underscores these ethical dilemmas. Newton-Rex left the company out of fear that his work might contribute to job losses among musicians[ 18 ] .
Despite these challenges, some in the industry see AI as an opportunity to enhance music discovery and listener engagement.
